The major runoff presently flows into Great Pond through a wetland that will be destroyed if the access way is built. It is this wetland which presently filters and cleanses the runoff, removing the salts and organic contamination which would otherwise run unimpeded into the lake.
Once the disruption to this ecosystem occurs it is almost impossible to recover, since the development cannot (essentially) be removed.
Hence the urgent need to convert this property into a conservation refuge. This is a one time only proposition.
